During the 1800s thousands of Canadians left to search for advancement opportunities in the United States. Here are some of them from Brome Co., Quebec.
Thanks to the Rev. Ernest M. Taylor, researchers have the names of Brome Co., Quebec families who moved from Canada to the United States. They are mentioned in his 1908 History of Brome County, Quebec. This work includes extensive genealogy notes of interest to family researchers. Canadians in MassachusettsFrank Wheeler wed May Bennet and went to Mansfield, MA. Newton S. Ball, born 1842, and Edgar Adolphus Ball, born 1847, moved to Springfield, MA. Forest Eugene Ball, born 1859, lived in Deerfield, MA. Ralph Moses went to Boston. A daughter of Roxy Perkins and Fowler Wacker married William Emerson and went to Massachusetts. Canadians in MinnesotaSamuel Baxter Foster attended the University of Wisconsin, worked with ex-Postmaster General Vilas, then went to Chicago with Judge Doolittle. There he wed Minnie M. Norton, daughter of Nathaniel Morton, one of Chicago’s earliest settlers. He died of typhoid fever in 1896 in Mississippi at age 35 and is buried at Knowlton, Quebec. William Moses of Alexandria, Minnesota was president of the Douglas Co. Bank there. Canadians in New YorkOrange Mills died in 1860 at Gloversville, New York.; Clark Mills died at Mechanicsville, New York. Bradbury Green died in New York; Minerva Green lived in New York. Moses Bradbury Green was killed in a railway accident at Jackson, Michigan, with a cousin of his, the son of Matthew W. Elkins, in 1879. Jonathan Elkins was a mayor of Albion, NY, where he died in 1854. John Powell married his cousin, Roxana Powell, and moved to Malone, New York; he died at Bangor, NY. His wife lived to be 101 and died with her two daughters (sic) in 1906 at Kinde, Michigan. The daughters were Mrs. Maynard and Mrs. Frank Dufresne. Other members of this Powell family in Michigan include Talford Powell, who married his cousin, Polly Buzzell, David Powell, and Tryphena Powell, who married Whiting Rexford. Canadians in VermontAlmira Green married a Methodist minister named Houston. They died at Hardwick, Vermont. Robert Manson Jr. died in a railroad accident near Richford, Vermont in 1874 at age 50. Chauncy Woodbury died in 1889 at North Troy, Vermont; his wife Judith died in 1900. Josiah Elkins became a civil engineer and surveyor for the town of Jay, VT, was first town clerk of Troy, VT, and died in Peacham, VT. Moses Elkins Sr. died in Johnson, VT. Curtis Elkins settled in Troy, VT. Lucy Bourn married Asa Curtis and lived at Lowell, Vermont. Samuel Page lived at West Darby, Vermont. Points WestThose who went from Brome County, Quebec, to the western United States include: Joseph Manson, living in Egan, South Dakota in 1903 at age 83; members of the Dr. Amos W. Lay family, in the state of Washington; Ira and Emily Austin, in California, where she wed George A. Lewis, formerly of Stanstead, Quebec; and, Rose Greene, married Frederick Peasley and settled in California. The Brome County Historical Society is the oldest organization of its kind in the Eastern Townships.
