Guess who missed the boat? The Mayflower pilgrims arrived at Plymouth minus their pastor, the Rev. John Robinson.

Pastor Robinson (1576-1625) saw the Mayflower pilgrims off in 1620, then stayed behind with the part of the flock remaining at Leyden, Holland, probably thinking he would come with them on a future voyage.

In 1629, 35 members of Rev. Robinson’s former Leyden congregation made the trip to Plymouth Colony, but the pastor who had joined them in 1606 at William Brewster’s Scrooby, England, home had died. Another group of the Leyden pilgrims crossed the Atlantic in 1630.

The Robinson Family in Massachusetts

The much-loved Pastor Robinson’s wife and children arrived at Plymouth with one of these later groups and established the Robinson family in New England. Son Isaac Robinson settled in Scituate, Massachusetts. He later fell out of favor for sympathizing with the Quakers and moved first to Barnstable, then to Falmouth. His brother John settled in the Cape Ann area.
