Robert Middleton arrived in Maryland before 1671. His 1672 marriage to Mary Wheeler carried with it her father's gift of 300 acres called Wheeler's Hope

In less than two decades, Robert Middleton acquired thousands of acres of land in Maryland’s Charles and Prince George’s counties. His prosperity brought him military titles and civic leadership positions. He was called Gentleman, Esquire, Planter and Merchant.

The Maryland Middletons

Various genealogies chronicle the Maryland Middletons. Most of Robert’s many children had large families, as did several of the grandchildren. The men married into prominent families. So did the women. Fortunately, genealogists pieced together the Middletons and allied families before they began spreading to the south and west.

It has been claimed that Robert Middleton was the son of a John Middleton who was born ca. 1612 in England and died sometime after 1662. He allegedly sailed from London on the Assurance de Lo and arrived in America in 1635, settling in Lancaster Co., Virginia. There was also a Charles Middleton who was brought to Maryland in 1633 by Governor Leonard Calvert. Most family researchers start, however, with Robert Middleton.

Line of Descent from Robert Middleton

This line of descent is through Robert Middleton of Maryland, who was born ca. 1650 and in 1672 married Mary Wheeler. Robert died in 1708 in Prince George’s Co., Maryland.

  • William Middleton was born ca. 1685 and died in 1769 in Prince Georges Co., Maryland. He married ca. 1712 Elizabeth Teare, who was born in 1689 to Rev. Hugh and Ruth (Holland) Teare. At the time, she was the widow of John Keech. She died sometime between 1748 and 1758 and William later married a woman named Henrietta, to whom he had more children. William Middleton, a Justice of the Peace, also served in the Maryland Assembly.
  • Holland Middleton, named after his maternal grandmother’s family, was born sometime after 1713 and died in 1793 in Hancock Co., Georgia. He first married his cousin Sarah, daughter of his uncle, Thomas Middleton. His second wife, Mary, was probably a Parks. Holland lived in Fairfax Co., Virginia, then moved to Georgia.
  • Robert Middleton, born after 1770 in Georgia, died before 1840 in Copiah Co., Mississippi. He was the husband of 1) Priscilla Finley, whom he wed in 1806, and 2) Elizabeth Mores/Moore, whom he wed in 1813 in Marion Co., Mississippi. She was still living when the 1870 census was taken.
  • Benjamin Parks Middleton (ca. 1824-ca. 1895) was married 1) in 1849 to Lavinda Norman (ca. 1831-ca. 1852) and 2) to Sarah Beasley in 1853.

This lineage should be used only to provide clues for genealogists who are documenting their own line of descent.

Descendants of the Robert Middleton who died in 1708 in Prince George’s Co., Maryland, are eligible for membership in The Order of the First Families of Maryland.

Companion articles tell how the Calverts made Maryland a unique colony and list Maryland colonists who arrived in 1634 aboard The Ark and The Dove.

SOURCE: This lineage was submitted in 1989 by M. Elaine (Thompson) Bullock, who was then living in Columbia, Mississippi.
