A collection of 186 genealogy columns from a Yarmouth, Nova Scotia newspaper, has been put into book form. Here is a list of the major families mentioned.

The book, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Genealogies, is a 956-page compilation by Martha and Bill Reamy that is regarded as a major source of information on the genealogies of immigrants to Nova Scotia. Family researchers will find that the families are traced in both directions—back across the Atlantic to earlier generations in Scotland or elsewhere, and from the immigrants to some of their descendants.

The Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Genealogies

The original newspaper columns detailing the genealogies of these families were researched and written by genealogist Gordon S. Brown. Many of the families cited were Loyalists from the thirteen American colonies. They had fought for England during the recent French and Indian War and still felt they owned allegiance to the mother country. Some of these American lines go back to the Mayflower pilgrims.

Many immigrants were from Scotland, but some were from other countries. Some of those from Scotland were exiled because of their political or religious views. Later, after Scotland became part of Great Britain, many residents of Scotland saw Nova Scotia as a place offering opportunities for advancement for themselves and their children.

In addition to genealogical data on these families, the book contains articles on Yarmouth source records. Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies is available from online booksellers.

(A companion article discusses both Yarmouth Nova Scotia Genealogies and another excellent source for family researchers, the book Nova Scotia Immigrants to 1867 by Col. Leonard H. Smith Jr. and Norma H. Smith. A related article gives a source for thousands of pages of material on Scottish Immigrants to North America.}
