Double Descent from William Ridgely (1645-1716)

Colonist Came from England to Maryland by 1690

Apr 9, 2009 Rosemary E. Bachelor

The first trace of William Ridgely is the 1690 purchase of Abbington, a 200-acre estate at the head of South River, not far from the present Annapolis, Maryland.

William Ridgely was born in 1645 in Devonshire, England. He and his wife, Elizabeth Duvall, bought their Maryland land from James Finley and deeded it to their son William in 1702 as a wedding gift. William, the immigrant, died in 1716. The family tombs are beside Broad Creek, four miles from Annapolis, MD. (Not all researchers agree that Elizabeth Duvall was William’s wife. A Duvall family did live on neighboring property.)

Double Lines of Descent

Given below are two lines of descent from William and Elizabeth. The lines diverge in the fifth generation and one of them includes William Randolph Hearst, the famous American newspaper publisher.

Second Generation: William Ridgeley Jr. (1678-1719) married, in 1702, Jane Westhall (1682-1748).

Third Generation: Westhall Ridgely (1706-1771) and Sarah Isaac (1714-1789) were wed in 1730.

Fourth Generation: Alice Ridgeley (1752-1792) who, in 1769, married Henry T. Hill (died 1795)

First Line of Descent

8. Otto G. Casey (1873-1955) in 1894 married Mary Anne Worker (1871-1951).

10. Patricia Hearst, born in 1954, married Bernard Shaw in 1979.

The Hearst Family

Patty Hearst, above, was the subject of a famous kidnapping case in her youth. Her great-grandmother, Phoebe Elizabeth Apperson, a Missouri teacher and philanthropist, married George Hearst, a California mining magnate and U. S. Senator. Their son, William Randolph Hearst, was a dominant figure in American journalism for more than 60 years. He built a vast publishing empire, was a nationally known politician and acquired an extensive art collection valued at approximately $50 million.

(A companion article on The Order of the First Families of Maryland lists qualifying ancestors, including a Mareen Duvall, who came to Anne Arundel County from France in 1658, and Henry Ridgely, who came to Anne Arundel County in 1661.)
