This outline of genealogical records of the Dunbar family includes an important correction to the family description in the 1893 History of Hingham, Massachusetts.

In the mid 1950s Dunbar Schuetz of Wausau, WI, reported to the New England Historical and Genealogical Register some records kept by his grandmother, Letitia (Single) Dunbar (1856-1941). Her husband was Charles Francis Dunbar (1845-1915), a native of Belchertown, Massachusetts. He was a son of Charles Thomas and Mary D. (Blood) Dunbar.

The grandparents of her husband were the Charles Dunbar born at Bridgewater, MA, in 1779 (who descended from Robert Dunbar of Hingham, MA) , and his wife, the former Susan G. Gates. There are at least two Mayflower ancestors through maternal lineages in this branch of the Dunbar family.

Correcting a Dunbar Family Error

Lincoln’s History of Hingham (1893) unfortunately mis-identified the Samuel Dunbar born in 1706 as the son of Peter Dunbar. Instead, this Samuel Dunbar, a 1745 Harvard graduate, is the Samuel Dunbar of Hingham and Bridgewater, MA, who was a son of the John Dunbar, who came from Scotland to Boston via the West Indies.

It is Charles Francis Dunbar who left his Belchertown, MA, home and went to Wisconsin, where he wed Letitia Single, who was born Nov. 3, 1856 in Wausau, WI, the daughter of Charles Alexander Single, born in 1822 in Hereford, England, to Benjamin Single and his wife. Letitia’s father, Charles, married Letitia’s mother, the former Elizabeth Taylor, who was born in 1824.
