Most American families will have at least one relative associated with the Civil War. Researching military records can provide much information.

The Civil War was a very important event in American history, taking place between 1861 and 1865. The conflict touched the entire nation, and involved more than 3 million men. Any American genealogy study will likely come across relatives who were part of the Civil War. There are a number of resources, including military records, available that can provide a great deal of genealogical information.

National Archives Civil War Records -

A comprehensive directory of resources and where to find these records. The site also allows researchers to order copies of records as well. Most of the entries here are indexes of microfilm files, and not an actually searchable database.

Cyndi's List of Civil War Resources - A huge collection of Civil War genealogy web sites that should provide more information that you'll know what to do with.

Civil War Forum - A message board where you can get in touch with other genealogists who are researching the Civil War as well. You never know who might hold that missing link you need.

Civil War Genealogy Database - A combination database and online community where other genealogists post their Civil War finds and look for missing ancestors.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System - A searchable collection of databases that can pinpoint where on the microfilm rolls you will find your relatives. Basically the same information as the National Archives site (above) but with a better search engine. You will still need to access the actual microfilm records to find your information.

Historical Timeline - A chronological list of the major events of the Civil War, including several historic photos. Not specifically genealogical, but a handy summary of the war for anyone not familiar with American history.
