The Rev. Peter Prudden followed the route of several English non-conformists and became a Congregational minister at Milford, CT.

Peter was born in 1601 at Kings Walden, Hertfordshire, England to the Rev. Robert and Mildred Prudden. The line can be traced back to a John Prudden born at Kings Walden in 1439.

Peter married Johanna Boice (or Boyse or Royse) in 1639 at Edgton in Yorkshire and they left that year for America. (Other descendants say this was his second wife and that they married in America.)

Indians Paid with Hatchets, Knives, Mirrors

In 1639, Rev. Peter Prudden purchased a large tract of land from the Paugusset Indians. The price he paid was six coats, ten blankets, one kettle, twelve hatchets, twelve hoes, two dozen knives and a dozen small mirrors, according to the website for the town of Orange, CT.

Line of Descent

This is the lineage of Ellsworth Marcus Davis, who provided it to this author. He was a son of Clarence Marcus Davis and Charlotte C. Bartholomew and grandson of Lillie M. Gillette (1859-1932) and Edward J. Davis (1859-1893). Descent from Rev. Peter Prudden, the immigrant, is:

  • Samuel Prudden, born ca. 1644, Milford, CT, which is where he died in 1685; married in 1669 at Stratford, CT, Grace Judson (1651-ca. 1724).
  • Samuel Prudden (1677-1742) of Milford; wed there in 1705 to Hannah Clark (1679/80-1752).
  • Samuel Prudden (1708-1774) of Milford, CT; married there in 1741 to Sarah Beard (1701-1788) of Milford.
  • Samuel Prudden (1743-1819) of Milford, CT; married Anna Clark (1759-1794) of Milford.
  • Sally Prudden (1792-1865), born 1792 at Milford and died 1865 at Oxford, CT; married at Milford in 1811 to Anson Davis, born 1785 at Oxford and died 1868, Seymour, CT.
  • Marcus Davis, born 1820, Seymour, CT, and died 1903, Oxford, CT; married in 1850 at Seymour to Sarah M. Greene, born 1831.
  • Edward J. Davis married Lillie M. Gillette and, as noted above, they were grandparents of Ellsworth Marcus Davis.

Rev. Peter Prudden, the immigrant ancestor, served the Congregational Church at Milford for 17 years and died at Milford in 1656.

More Clergy Ancestors

Ellsworth Marcus Davis, born on Christmas Day of 1907 at New Haven, CT, descended from six colonial clergymen. Through his mother, Charlotte C. (Bartholomew) Davis, he descended from the Rev. John Bowers, who was born in England ca. 1629, graduated from Harvard in 1649 and served the First Congregational Church at Derby, CT, for many years.

The 12th generation of his family to live in Connecticut, Ellsworth also descends from the Rev. John Lothrop and Rev. Nicholas Street.

Companion articles give his descent from the Rev. Peter Bulkley (including his descent from the Rev. John Jones) and membership information for the Society of Descendants of the Colonial Clergy.
