Robert Titus (ca. 1600-1671) arrived in 1635 with his family aboard the ship Hopewell, settling first at Rehoboth, MA, then on New York's Long Island, where he died.

John (b. 1627), Robert’s eldest son, stayed in Rehoboth to found the New England branch of his family. Robert and other sons moved to Long Island in the 1650s to begin the Long Island branch of the family.

Husband and Wife Share Titus & Rowland Ancestors

Below are lineages of a husband and wife. Wilbur Moore, the husband, descends from Robert’s son Edmund. His wife, the former Mary Shaw, descends from son Abiel. Titus family researchers should be warned that there are other unrelated Titus families in America during the colonial period. The majority of New England and New York Tituses descend from Robert.

Descent from Edmund Titus

Wilbur Moore submitted this line of descent to this article’s writer in 1992.

Descent from Abiel Titus

Abiel Titus is one of the sons of Robert-1 Titus who moved to Long Island. This descent is for Mary Shaw, wife of Wilbur Moore, whose Titus lineage is given above.

  • Abiel Titus married ca. 1672, Rebecca Scudder; lived at Huntington, NY.
  • Mary Titus (1673/4-1730) married ca. 1691 at Jamaica, NY, Jonathan Wood; both died at Wilton, CT.

  • Titus Wood (1756-1839) of Ridgefield, CT, married ca. 1780, Susanna Lasell (1762-1830) at Lanesboro, MA, where both died.
  • Lucy Wood (1781-1858) of Lanesboro married ca. 1800, Joel Rowland (ca. 1770-1850); both died at Edwardsville, NY.
  • Israel Rowland (1802-1865) of Edwardsville, NY, married 2) in 1859, Mrs. Roxalana (Wright) Giffin (1823-1889) of Chester, VT, and Boulder, CO.

  • Edna Baylor (1887-1966) of Boulder, CO, and Los Angeles, CA, married, 1911, Bellingham, WA, Oscar Shaw (1885-1960) from Derbyshire, England.
  • Mary E. Shaw, born 1913, Bellingham, WA, married Wilbur C. Moore. (See his lineage above).

Most of Wilbur Moore’s Rowland ancestry is in earlier generations, but the Rowland ancestry of his wife is in recent generations. These charts demonstrate a phenomenon many genealogists don’t recognize. We are all much more closely related than we realize.
