Members of six families made up the majority of passengers on the ship Submission's stormy passage from Liverpool, England to Choptank, Maryland in 1682.
Two events happened on the second day of the second month of this journey, according to the ship’s log, which doesn’t say if they are related. First, Abraham Blackshaw, 10, son of Randolph Blackshaw, died. Second, the ship encountered a violent storm and didn’t have a chance to put the child’s body overboard until the storm abated. The log reports: “A great head (of) sea broke over the ship & staved the boat & took most part of it away, broke up the main hatches that were both nailed & corked & took them away that they were not seen where they went, broke the boat’s mast & hyst that were lashed in the midship, broke the gunnell head in the midship & broke the forre shet & took several things of(f) the decks & several things that were in the boat it cast betwixt decks.” Harrison and Pemberton FamiliesThe following passengers were from Lancashire: James Harrison, 54, and family members Anna, 58, and Agnes, 80. Ralph Pemberton, 70, with Phineas, 32, Phebe, 22, Abigail, 2, and Joseph, 16 weeks, all surnamed Pemberton. Also from Lancashire were Robert Bond, 14, Joseph Mather, 18, Richard Radclif, 21, Joseph Steward, 14, Elizabeth Bradbury, 16, Jane Lyon, 16, and, with no age given, Lydia Wharmsby and Allis Dickinson. Blackshaw, Bradbury and Clayton FamiliesThe Blackshaws were Randolph, 60, Allis, 43, Abraham, 10, Jacob, 8, Nehemiah, 3, Phebe, 16, Sarah, 14, Mary, 6, and Martha, 1. The Bradburys were Roger, 49, Ellenor, 46, Jacob, 18, Joseph, 10, Roger, 2, Martha, 14, and Sarah, 8. The Clayton family consisted of James, 50, Jane, 48, James, 16, John, 11, Joseph, 5, Sarah, 14, Mary, 8, and Lydia, 5. All three families were from Cheshire. The Jones FamilyThe Jones family was from Wales. They were Ellis, 45, and Jane, 40, with Barbary, 13, Mary, 12, Dorothy, 10 and Isaac, 4 months. With them, and also from Wales, were Rebecca Winn, 20, Jane Mede, 15, and Marjory Mede, 11. Also among the passengers were Janeclif Hodges and Ellen Holland, who may have been servants. Ship’s CrewThe ship’s master was James Settle and Samuel Rigg was mate. Brian Fleetwood was ship carpenter and Anthony Busshell was cooper. Apprentices were Henry Blivan and Michael Colon. Listed with the ship’s crew as servants were Ellijah Cobham, Thomas Bullock, Peter Travis, John Royle and Thomas Hateley.
