Family researchers value hard-to-find Bible records because of the genealogical data they reveal. These Bible records are for a Stover family living at Cape Neddick, ME.

Genealogists rarely find Bible records for their ancestors. These Stover family Bible records were located and transcribed by Lester M. Bragdon in 1935, when the Bible belonged to Elroy S. Stover of Belmont, MA.

Birth Records

These records are for the family of Stephen Stover, born May 6, 1805, and his wife, the former Charlotte Littlefield, born March 8, 1812. They were married Feb. 1, 1831. These children are named in the Bible records:

Barron, who may also have been known as Oliver* (b. Nov. 21, 1831), Josiah A. Stover (b. Aug. 21, 1833), Charles M. Stover (b. July 4, 1835), Nancy M. Stover, possibly known as Malvina* (b. Jan. 8, 1837), George G. Stover (b. Jan. 13, 1839), Charlotte A. Stover (b. June 2, 1841), Elizabeth T. Stover (b. July 4, 1843), Howard M. Stover (b. Jan. 8, 1846), Julietta A. Stover (b. Aug. 3, 1848) , Melvin F. (or Melville*) Stover (b. Dec. 3, 1851; died Nov. 17, 1927), Williamena G. Stover, who appears to be a boy named William* (b. Dec. 27, 1853; died Feb. 16, 1932), and Charles E. Stover (b. May 17, 1856)

Death Records

Charles M. Stover** (d. Aug. 8, 1858), George G. Stover (d. Aug, 31, 1859), Stephen Stover, the father (d. Sept. 13, 1868), Barron Stover (d. May 27, 1871), Josiah A. Stover (d. March 25, 1894), Charlotte L. Stover, the mother (d. Feb. 22, 1903), Alice S. Stover (d. April 16, 1903), Elizabeth T. Stover (d. Dec. 19, 1911).

Marriage Records

The marriages in these Bible records are not easy to sort out. The marriage dates are given for the Stover children, but often their spouses aren't named.

Marriage dates for children of Stephen and Charlotte Stover: Barron Stover, Esq. (m. Jan. 14, 1855), Charlotte A. Stover (m. Feb. 27, 1860), Malvenah S. Stover (m. Jan. 22, 1865), Juliette A. Stover (April 15, 1866), Howard M. Stover (m. July 26, 1869), Josiah A. Stover (m. Oct. 5, 1861), Melvin F. Stover (m. April 23, 1876), Williemena G. Stover (m. Oct. 27, 1877), Charles E. Stover (m. Jan. 12, 1881), Howard M. Stover (m. Feb. 1, 1905) , perhaps to a second wife.

These marriages appear to be for grandchildren of Stephen and Charlotte: Kenneth B. Stover and Gladys Williams (Oct. 17, 1918), Reginald S. Stover and Lora Freeman Stoddard (June 17, 1925), Harry E. Stover and Harriet W. Moore (Aug. 16, 1896), Roy S. Stover and Mary Short (Nov. 24, 1904), Roland M. Stover and Emily Ackley (Nov. 28, 1917)

These entries under marriages concern some of those being married: Emma A. Stover (born May 4, 1856 and d. June 15, 1928) is difficult to place in this family; her birth date could make her the child of Stephen and Charlotte, but they had a son Charles born 13 days later; Harry E. Stover (b. Oct. 6, 1876); Elroy S. Stover (b. Nov. 3, 1877); and, Roland M. Stover (b. Aug. 15, 1893).

Stover Families

The Bible records end by listing children of two of the married couples. Children of H. E. Stover: Reginald S. Stover (b. March 15, 1896), Kenneth Barron Stover (b. April 10, 1897) and Howard G. Stover (b. March 22, 1899). Children of Roland M. Stover and Emily Ackley (b. Dec. 31, 1891): Melvin F. Stover (b. Jan. 10, 1919), Merriam Alma Stover (b. May 14, 1921), Donald Joseph Stover (b. Aug. 12, 1929; d. May 1, 1930), and Robert Alan Stover (b. April 26, 1931)

* Names compared to children listed in 1850 and 1860 census records.

** It seems strange that this family would have a son, Charles M. Stover, dying in 1858 when they supposedly have a son, Charles E. Stover, born in 1856.
