New Software for Me

I finally switched genealogy programs

My experiences moving my genealogy records from an outdated program to something more up-to-date.

I've been using an old genealogy program (Generations 8) and have been wanting to switch for a while. Lately, its been getting buggy and I'm just scared to death at the idea I might lose any information. So I did some reading, and since I have a smallish budget to work with, downloaded Rootsmagic 3.0 for a demo.

Well, I used my program to export a GEDCOM file, and imported it into Rootsmagic. The whole process took about 10 minutes. And I was happy to find all my information had transferred without a hitch.

I've purchased the program and am learning the ropes. It's hard to switch after so many years. I have noticed one major feature that I'm really sorry to have lost. My old program marked each individual with the relationship to the root person (me). So at a glance, I could see who was my great-great-great-great-grandfather, or 4th cousin twice removed. This program doesn't have that.

Overall, I'm happy with the new interface and will be writing a full review of Rootsmagic 3.0 in a few weeks.
