But you might be surprised to find out that the heritage of the tartan isn't as important to genealogy as you might think it is.


The history of the Scottish tartan is a bit more complicated than most people realize. Hopefully, you haven't spent too much time trying to track down the exact pattern that belonged to your family so many generations ago.

The tartan was simply a style of fabric popular at one time in Scotland, and only through several misunderstandings with the British, did the patterns become associated with family names. It's actually a fairly recent event and not steeped in old lore.
